KAIPARA, NEW ZEALAND · CONTEMPORARY MIXED-MEDIA ARTIST
Edie Chappell
Edie Chappell is a mixed-media artist whose intuitive, layered works explore connection, colour and the relationship between our inner and outer worlds. Working from her studio in a small bay on the Kaipara Harbour, she allows each artwork to evolve slowly through experimentation, observation and instinct.
about
Edie Chappell’s creative process is driven by curiosity and a love of mark-making, colour and material exploration.
Her works often begin with ink spread freely across a plain or textured surface. Rather than starting with a fixed image or outcome, Edie pauses to observe what has emerged before responding with the next mark, colour or layer.
Acrylic paint, charcoal, acrylic pens and spray paint may gradually enter the work, alongside stencils and other tools used to build texture and movement. Some pieces are completed with oils, while others remain entirely in ink.
Edie rejects rigid formulas in favour of a spontaneous and evolving process. A work may remain in her studio for some time as she continues to look, respond and add only what she feels it needs. It is through this unhurried conversation with the surface that each piece begins to reveal what it is meant to become.
Lines, dots, shapes and recurring marks often express Edie’s interest in connection. They suggest relationships between people, experiences and the visible and unseen worlds that surround us.
There is also a spiritual quality to her practice. As layers accumulate and unexpected forms emerge, Edie develops a personal connection with the work—one guided as much by feeling as by conscious decision-making.
At other times, her approach is deliberately playful. Colour and shape become the focus, creating expressive works filled with energy and unexpected pops of colour.
Primarily self-taught, Edie has expanded her practice through local and online study. She is involved with Mangawhai Artists Incorporated and exhibits her work within the surrounding creative community.
Edie’s artworks remain open to interpretation, inviting viewers to discover their own meanings and connections within the evolving marks, forms and textures.
Because sometimes an artwork finds its meaning slowly—one instinctive mark and unexpected layer at a time.

Edie Chappell
A richly layered abstract work exploring connection, movement and the threads that bind us together.
Something Greater by New Zealand mixed-media artist Edie Chappell is an expressive composition alive with colour, texture and intricate mark-making. Deep ocean blues and turquoise flow through warm passages of orange, ochre and green, creating a vibrant sense of movement across the surface.
Fine, wandering lines travel through the painting like paths, waterways or connecting threads. Repeated circles, dots and layered impressions invite closer looking, revealing new details and relationships within the work.
The piece speaks of the journeys we take and the connections we gather along the way. It reminds us that we move through the world not in isolation, but as part of something larger—a shared and continually evolving tapestry.
Layered. Connected. Expressive.
