WELLINGTON, NEW ZEALAND · PAINTER & ILLUSTRATOR
Dean Proudfoot
Dean Proudfoot is a Wellington-based painter and illustrator whose work sits firmly within the Lowbrow tradition—accessible, playful and never locked behind theory or elitism. Through clarity, humour and familiar subject matter, his work challenges, provokes a response and, preferably, leaves the viewer smiling.
about
Growing up in Gisborne, Dean Proudfoot was drawn early to art’s ability to connect with people. That instinct continues to shape a practice grounded in everyday experience, visual storytelling and the unexpected character of familiar things.
Dean’s current series, Cone-illogical, transforms the humble traffic cone into an unlikely protagonist.
The series began during long hours spent in traffic, watching bright orange plastic “monuments” quietly direct and control the world around them. Within the enforced stillness, Dean began to see the cones differently—not simply as practical objects, but as absurd, authoritative and oddly charismatic characters.
Through humour and visual wit, Cone-illogical explores power, stillness and the quiet absurdity of objects that control us while carrying none of the blame.
Alongside his fine-art practice, Dean has worked for more than 30 years as an award-winning commercial illustrator, collaborating with clients throughout New Zealand and internationally through Watermark Creative.
This experience can be seen in the visual clarity, strong composition and accessible humour of his paintings. Each work communicates quickly, yet closer viewing reveals the ideas and observations beneath its surface.
Dean’s wider practice moves between florals, landscapes, nostalgia and the overlooked details of daily life. Although the subjects change, his paintings retain a strong sense of character and remain open, engaging and firmly connected to lived experience.
His work is held in private and corporate collections, including the Arts House Trust and QT Art Hotel.
Recent milestones include receiving the inaugural Pippy Art Award at the 2025 New Zealand Art Show, exhibiting in Christchurch for the first time at the Aotearoa Art Show and completing artist residencies at Scots College and Wellesley College.
Dean’s extensive exhibition history includes regular presentations with 5@The Portrait Gallery in Wellington, Smyth Galleries in Auckland, the New Zealand Art Show and numerous group exhibitions dating back to the mid-2000s.
A 2008 landscape painting of Tāme Iti later became an unexpected footnote in New Zealand art history when Iti publicly corrected the spelling of his name on the work. Dean welcomed the intervention for giving the painting renewed life and a more powerful meaning.
Whether painting landscapes, flowers, memories or traffic cones, Dean brings a sharp observational eye to the things we often pass without a second thought.
Because sometimes the most ordinary object is simply waiting for someone to notice its story.

Dean Proudfoot
The humble traffic cone. Bright orange. Universally cursed. Almost never questioned.
Cone-illogical began during hours spent in traffic, watching orange plastic monuments quietly boss everyone around. Within that enforced stillness, Dean began to see them less as practical objects and more as characters—absurd, authoritative and oddly charismatic.
The work also pays homage to Colin McCahon’s iconic I AM paintings. Drawing on their bold simplicity, strong forms and distinctly New Zealand visual language, Cone-illogical transforms the everyday traffic cone into a modern icon—familiar, playful and unexpectedly powerful.
