AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND · CONTEMPORARY GLASS & ABSTRACT ARTIST

Harinder Rajpal

Harinder Rajpal is an Auckland-based artist whose vibrant abstract paintings explore memory, consequence, resilience and the inner landscapes shaped by human choices. Working in reverse on glass, he combines geometric structure, layered colour and occasional textual elements to create meditative works that invite personal interpretation.

about

Harinder Rajpal’s artistic journey began in India, where he studied at Delhi University before entering the fashion industry as a textile designer in 2003.

His experience with textiles developed his sensitivity to colour, pattern and composition, establishing the foundations of the distinctive visual language that continues throughout his work today.

After completing a Diploma in Business Management in New Zealand in 2014, Harinder made Auckland his home. He now lives and works there as an artist, husband and father.

Glass is central to Harinder’s practice. Its elegance, fragility and complexity reflect the intricacies of the human mind while providing a distinctive surface for his geometric abstractions.

Working in reverse means the image is constructed from front to back. The earliest marks remain most visible, requiring Harinder to anticipate how each layer will interact before the completed work is finally revealed.

Strong geometric arrangements and balanced fields of colour form the structure of his paintings. Layers of vibrant pigment develop intuitively until the composition reaches a sense of equilibrium.

Through abstraction, Harinder explores memory, consequence and quiet resilience. His works reflect on past encounters, compromised decisions and the wider social structures that influence our internal worlds without imposing moral judgement.

In a world saturated with noise and information, Harinder creates spaces for introspection and subtle confrontation. His paintings do not directly represent particular events; instead, they evoke abstract states of being that feel both familiar and elusive.

Although connected through a cohesive visual style, each work carries its own story—like individual verses belonging to the same couplet.

Harinder has exhibited his work in galleries across Auckland, New Delhi and Mumbai.

Through colour, form and the reflective qualities of glass, his paintings invite viewers to pause, enter a moment of stillness and consider their own emotional response.

Because sometimes clarity begins when the noise falls away.
