about
Based in Te Atatū Peninsula , Auckland, creativity has always been an important part of Stacey Yates’ life.
Throughout more than 25 years as an art teacher, Stacey has encouraged others to experiment, take creative risks and discover the pleasure of making. Her own practice has continued to develop alongside her teaching, shaped by the same openness and curiosity she shares with her students.
Working across abstraction and expressive florals, Stacey explores colour, texture, layering and the unexpected marks that emerge during the painting process. In recent years, her approach has become increasingly intuitive as she has allowed herself to paint simply for the love of painting.
Floral painting has become a natural expression of this freedom. Stacey is drawn to the beauty, energy and abundance of flowers and the way they can immediately change how we feel.
Her blooms may be recognisable, but they are never intended to be botanically accurate. Shape, colour and texture are loosened and reimagined, creating flowers that could not necessarily exist in nature but feel joyful, generous and alive.
Rather than beginning with a fixed outcome, Stacey responds to what is happening on the canvas. Each layer, mark and shift in colour influences what comes next, allowing the painting to develop organically through a balance of instinct and discovery.
After years of giving others permission to experiment, Stacey is now offering herself that same freedom—to let go of expectations, resist overthinking and create without requiring every painting to carry a complicated explanation.
Her work is ultimately about colour, beauty and joy. It celebrates the pleasure of making and the simple truth that an artwork does not need to be overthought to bring happiness.
Because sometimes joy is meaning enough.
