TĀMAKI MAKAURAU, NEW ZEALAND · CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPE PAINTER
Bridget Fox
Bridget Fox is a contemporary landscape painter working primarily in oil on canvas and acrylic on wood panel. Her atmospheric works explore the places where land loses its certainty—wild coastlines, overgrown suburban margins and the shifting boundary between the built and natural worlds.
about
Based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, Bridget Fox begins with landscape—particularly the places where the edges feel unstable and something less easily defined begins to emerge.
The wild surf beaches of West Auckland’s Waitākere coast sit at the heart of her current practice. Piha, Karekare and Muriwai are places of force and exposure, where black volcanic sand meets the open ocean and the quality of light can change without warning.
Bridget’s Black Sands series responds to the physical and atmospheric energy of this coastline. Working at a large scale in oil on canvas, she builds each painting through gestural and physical mark-making, seeking to hold something of the landscape’s movement, weight and presence rather than simply describe its appearance.
An earlier body of work, Vanishing in Green, turns towards the quieter, more domestic landscape of Birkdale on Auckland’s North Shore. Created in acrylic on wood panel, these smaller paintings explore suburban streets and overgrown margins—the places where the city begins to trail away and the man-made gives way to something slower, wilder and less certain.
Across both bodies of work, Bridget is interested in presence: the particular combination of light, atmosphere and physical weight that makes a place feel entirely itself.
The contrast between the two series is part of this ongoing exploration. One faces the exposed power of the coast; the other looks closely at the overlooked edges of the everyday. Both consider the point at which a familiar landscape begins to shift.
Bridget has studied painting at the Browne School of Art since 2023. Her work has been exhibited at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts in Wellington, Mairangi Arts Centre, the Tasman National Art Awards, the Hibiscus and Bays Art Awards and the Hope and Sons Art Awards.
She is currently developing a new body of work responding to the Otago coastline ahead of a forthcoming exhibition in Dunedin in 2027.
For Bridget, painting is a way of paying attention—not only to how a place looks, but to the light, energy and atmosphere that allow it to be felt.
And sometimes, it is at the uncertain edges that a landscape reveals the most.

Bridget Fox
A quiet South Island landscape where golden light settles across mountain, water and sky. Series-South Island Landscapes 2026
Still Fiord captures a mountain-ringed fiord at golden hour, its calm water holding the reflected glow of the peaks above. Deep shadowed landforms frame luminous turquoise water, while warm ochre light moves across the mountains and surrounding sky.
Bridget Fox’s landscapes are shaped by close attention to atmosphere—the particular light, weather and scale of a place. Here, the stillness of the water creates a sense of pause, while the towering peaks retain the wildness and isolation of the southern landscape.
Part of Bridget’s South Island landscape series, this work balances strength and tranquillity. Broad, expressive marks give the mountains a physical presence, while softer colour transitions across the water capture the fleeting quality of reflected light.
Still. Luminous. Expansive.
