about

Ricki Hudson creates paintings that are grounded in personal and cultural identity while capturing the energy of a particular place and moment in time.

Local landscapes provide the foundation for the work, but they are never simply representations of place. Through colour, material and sound, Ricki builds connections between whakapapa, lived experience, memory and the shifting character of Ōtautahi.

Ink and wood ground the paintings in whenua and whakapapa. Metallic elements reference the stained-glass windows of St Michael’s Church, a place connected to Ricki’s paternal family history, while fluorescent colour carries the loud, synthetic energy of growing up in the 1980s.

Each painting is paired with a song, creating a soundtrack that allows the work to be experienced as more than a visual object. The music locates each piece within a specific mood and moment—something to be seen, heard and felt.

Ricki’s eight-part series, The Kick On, follows the unfolding story of a summer Saturday spent on a bar crawl through some of Christchurch’s most iconic—and occasionally notorious—venues, after an already substantial Friday night.

Each of the eight paintings is anchored by a different base colour: red, pink, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Together, they track the changing rhythm of the day, from the dusty beginnings and mellow afternoon to the increasingly unhinged energy of the night.

The accompanying songs create a soundtrack for that progression. As the colours intensify and the music shifts, each work becomes part landscape, part memory and part record of a city experienced from the inside.

Through The Kick On, Ricki captures the way place is carried through people, music and shared experience—the venues may change or disappear, but the stories remain embedded in the landscape.

And sometimes, to remember a place properly, you need to remember how it sounded.
