GISBORNE, NEW ZEALAND · OIL PAINTER
Veronika Lambert
Veronika Lambert is a Gisborne-based painter whose atmospheric coastal works evoke a sense of peace, serenity and solitude. Working primarily in oils, she captures the changing light, colour and quiet presence of New Zealand’s coastline.
about
Originally from Germany, Veronika made New Zealand her home in 2007. After meeting her husband, she settled in a small seaside community on the East Coast, just outside Gisborne, where the ocean became part of her everyday life.
She began painting in late 2021, drawing inspiration from her surroundings and time spent exploring local beaches and the wider New Zealand coastline. Oil paint allows her to blend, soften and move colour across the canvas, creating the luminous skies, shifting water and atmospheric effects that define her work.
Rather than simply recording a place, Veronika seeks to capture how it feels to stand within it—the stillness of an empty beach, the changing light across the sea and those fleeting moments when the landscape seems to fall quiet.
“There is something about the sea—it creates creativity. I am fortunate to live at the beach and wake with the sun rising over the ocean. Its ever-changing beauty inspires me to pick up the paintbrush and create.”
Since beginning her practice, Veronika has exhibited throughout New Zealand. Her work has appeared in the Gisborne Artists’ Society Annual Exhibition at Tairāwhiti Museum, the Hibiscus and Bays Art Awards, the Hope and Sons Art Prize, the Craigs Aspiring Art Prize in Wānaka and exhibitions at Matawhero Wines Cellar Door Gallery and The Aviary Collective.
Her exhibition history also includes Mowai—The Weight of Water, the Gisborne She Shed Tour, Tāwhirimātea a Tūmatauenga, Chisel and Brush, and Hinterglass, a solo exhibition exploring reverse-glass painting. In 2024, she presented a solo exhibition at Matawhero Cellar Door Gallery in Gisborne.
Veronika was selected as a finalist in the Craigs Aspiring Art Prize in 2024, 2025 and 2026, as well as the Hope and Sons Art Prize and Hibiscus and Bays Art Awards in 2026.
Through each work, she offers viewers a moment of escape—a place to pause, breathe and experience the enduring calm of the coast

A Piece of Paradise captures the quiet beauty of an East Coast shoreline, where pale cliffs stretch across calm blue water.
Soft pinks, blues and earthy greens create a gentle atmosphere, while the sweeping coastline gives the work a wonderful sense of openness and distance.
Peaceful and understated, this work celebrates an unspoilt corner of coastal New Zealand.
