Where The Light Falls

Sophie Pendergast

Bright colour and weathered timber come together in a window-like work that carries traces of another life.

In Where The Light Falls, Sophie Pendergast arranges reclaimed timber within an octagonal wooden frame. Lime green, orange and turquoise bands contrast with rich natural wood tones, while worn paint, exposed grain and surface marks give the work texture and character.

Inspired by old barn and port windows, the composition suggests looking out towards a landscape beyond. Its colours offer glimpses of sky, water, earth and vegetation, inviting you to pause and imagine the view. Made from reclaimed mataī, kauri, rimu and mahogany, the work reflects Sophie’s interest in New Zealand’s heritage architecture and the reuse of materials from demolished Auckland villas and bungalows.

This sculptural wall work would bring colour and warmth to an entranceway, living room or space above a sideboard, pairing naturally with timber furniture, plants and simple interiors.
