The Nikau Garden

Tracey Purkis

Sweeping nīkau fronds, native birds and bright flowers bring a garden to life in the last light of day.

In The Nikau Garden, Tracey Purkis layers lush greens with vivid red, orange and pink, framed by glimpses of blue sky. A kererū spreads its wings beneath the palm canopy, while white renga renga flowers and curved leaves lead the eye through the tall composition.

Inspired by her garden at sunset, the painting captures moments of movement and quiet discovery. A pīwakawaka flies among the foliage, a tūī sings in the harakeke, and a snail slips slowly beneath the lilies. Each detail invites a closer look into this colourful garden world.

Its slender vertical format would bring colour and interest to an entranceway, living room or a narrow wall beside a doorway.
