In The Loop, Tracey Purkis brings the natural world of Matiu / Somes Island into a vibrant, layered composition. Birds and reptiles appear among leafy branches, flowering flax and rocky ground, with Wellington Harbour stretching beyond.

The painting follows the rhythms of life within this island sanctuary. A nesting karoro and sunbathing skink enjoy the spring light, while kākāriki flash across the sky. As evening approaches, kororā return to their waiting chicks and a tuatara begins its nightly foraging. These hidden encounters invite you to slow down and discover something new.
