Terrain

Sophie Pendergast

Weathered greens and warm timber build a layered composition full of texture and movement.

In Terrain, Sophie Pendergast pieces together reclaimed wood in an arrangement of intersecting strips, blocks and angular shapes. Pale mint and deeper green painted surfaces sit alongside rich brown timber, with cracked paint, exposed grain and worn edges revealing the materials’ history.

Made from mahogany, kauri and rimu salvaged from old Auckland bungalows and villas, the work marks Sophie’s first move beyond traditional square and rectangular compositions. Its irregular outline and overlapping layers give architectural fragments a new sculptural form, reflecting her ongoing interest in heritage and material reuse.

This wall sculpture would bring warmth and character to an entranceway, living room or space above a sideboard, complementing natural timber, concrete and neutral interiors.
