Soft terracotta lines shift across the canvas, carrying traces of Wellington’s South Coast.

In Shifting, Tara Luty creates gently undulating bands of warm orange against a pale ground. Their layered edges move across the canvas like a landscape in continual motion, held within a custom Tasmanian oak frame.

The pigment is made from fragments of brick found along Wellington’s south coast. Once part of unknown structures, the bricks have been worn and rounded by the waves of Te Moana-o-Raukawa Cook Strait. Tara brings these fragments into her painting to reflect on the natural and cultural forces that shape a place over time.

With its earthy palette and quiet rhythm, Shifting would bring warmth to a living room, entranceway or reading space, complementing natural timber and soft neutral interiors.

Earthy · Reflective · Rhythmic
Oil on canvas, with pigment made from found brick · 76 cm wide × 101.5 cm high · 2024
FRAMED · Custom Tasmanian oak frame. Ready to hang.
