Three children and a dark horse share a quietly absorbing scene, set against muted blue-grey and warm terracotta.
In Rite of Passage, Laurie Roodt places a horse at the centre of a composition with three young figures. One child crouches beside its legs, while the others stand nearby, their gestures suggesting curiosity, concentration and watchfulness. Blocks of colour and broken surface marks give the scene a layered, almost remembered quality.
Part of her Kinder Tribe series, the painting considers childhood and the ways its freedoms and expectations change across generations. The relationship between the children and the animal invites reflection on trust, discovery and growing confidence.
Its horizontal proportions would bring narrative interest and thoughtful presence to a living room, study or space above a sideboard, complementing timber, leather and understated interiors.
