Jimmy’s Jungle Garden

Tracey Purkis

Golden kōwhai, watchful birds and a hidden ginger cat bring a backyard jungle to life.

In Jimmy’s Jungle Garden, Tracey Purkis fills a tall, narrow canvas with lush foliage, bright yellow kōwhai flowers and ripe orange grapefruit. Tūī nestle among the branches, a butterfly rests near lilac blooms, and a pūkeko peers through the greenery. Look closer and Jimmy, the neighbour’s ginger cat, appears beneath the leaves.

Inspired by Rousseau’s imagined jungles, Tracey reinterprets her own garden in Te Horo on the Kāpiti Coast. Her love of birds, colour and hidden visual treasures turns this familiar setting into a layered scene that rewards slow looking.

Its slender vertical format would bring colour and botanical detail to an entranceway, hallway or narrow living room wall, inviting small discoveries each time you pass.
