In Emergence, a deep band of blue crosses a field of pale blue, grey, green and muted pink. Some forms have clear edges while others fade into the surrounding colour. Fine lines and glimpses of marks beneath the surface give the painting a sense of history, as though each layer has left something behind.
Katherine Simpson works by building, removing and responding to what appears as she paints. That process is visible here: a strong structure holds the composition together, while softer passages leave space for uncertainty and discovery. The title suggests something coming into view without telling us precisely what it is.
