Adrienne Rewi

Eucalyptus trees standing as individual presences within the Australian landscape. 2019

Trees sit at the heart of many of Adrienne Rewi’s Australian paintings, particularly the constantly changing forms of the eucalyptus. Their pale trunks, peeling bark and sculptural silhouettes became an enduring fascination during her time in Victoria.

In Totems, a group of luminous tree forms rises through layered fields of green, burgundy and deep shadow. Each trunk appears distinct in shape and gesture, giving the trees an almost figurative presence while remaining firmly connected to the landscape around them.

Broad, sweeping brushstrokes create a sense of movement through the land, contrasted by the upright forms that hold the composition in place. The work captures Adrienne’s response to eucalyptus trees as both part of the wider bush and compelling subjects in their own right.

This distinctive work would bring depth and organic energy to a living room, hallway, study, entranceway or eclectic interior, sitting especially well alongside rich colour, pattern and collected objects.
