Slender jaws and weathered metal give an everyday workshop tool a striking sculptural presence.
In Pliers, Nina Julyan isolates the tool against a dark background. Its tapered jaws rise through the composition, while a circular opening and rounded hinge interrupt the straight lines. Brown traces of rust contrast with the light catching its silver-toned surface.
Part of Nina’s Workshop Series, this photograph shifts a familiar tool into unfamiliar territory through close focus and isolation. Removed from their everyday setting, the pliers invite speculation about their form and purpose. Echoing the presentation practices of museums and archives, the series gives overlooked objects renewed significance and space for contemplation.
Presented in a black frame, this work would add character to a study, studio or living space, displayed alone or alongside other photographs from the series.
