Liminal Moments, Liminal Spaces — Brooch II

$270.00

Fran Carter

A bold V-shaped brooch that gives discarded plastic a vivid and unexpected new life.

Created by Wellington contemporary jeweller Fran Carter, Brooch II belongs to her Liminal Moments, Liminal Spacesseries. The work draws inspiration from the overlooked transitional spaces of the city—moss-filled cracks, peeling paint, fallen leaves and fragments of discarded material.

Fran transforms single-use gelato sample spoons through her own hand-developed process, creating a translucent material layered with soft greens, yellow, blue and touches of orange. Its naturally irregular edges contrast with the strong geometric V shape of the brooch.

Fine silver rivets secure the textured surface to its brass backing, while fluorescent orange enamel on the reverse references hazard signs and stormwater grates. The result is a striking piece of wearable art that challenges traditional ideas of material value and beauty.

The series was selected for Adorn Axis’s online exhibition Here & Now: A Sign of the Times, presented for New York Jewelry Week in 2022.

Geometric. Reclaimed. Unexpected.

Repurposed plastic from gelato sample spoons, brass, fine silver, stainless-steel wire and enamel paint V-shaped contemporary brooch with stainless-steel pin fitting 2022

This is an original, handcrafted piece of contemporary jewellery. Small variations and irregularities are intrinsic to the reclaimed materials and making process.
