about
Based in Hamilton, New Zealand, Antonia Leonard creates contemporary abstract paintings inspired by nature, imagined landscapes and the emotional possibilities of colour.
Her practice brings together bold colour combinations, intriguing shapes and unexpected structures. Layers of acrylic, ink, pencil and crayon create movement and depth, allowing spontaneous marks to sit alongside more considered forms.
Antonia’s work moves between landscape and abstraction. Familiar references to land, sea and organic forms may appear within a painting without fully defining it, leaving space for the viewer to bring their own memories and experiences to the work.
Colour sits at the heart of her practice. It carries energy, mood and emotion—sometimes vibrant and optimistic, at other times grounding or reflective. Through the balance of structure and freedom, Antonia creates paintings that feel both connected to place and open to imagination.
Her work also explores individuality and the courage to stand apart. Rather than asking every element to blend in, she allows colour, shape and line to hold their own presence while remaining part of a larger visual conversation.
Antonia’s paintings invite us to look beyond the immediately recognisable and discover our own sense of place within them.
And sometimes, the shape that stands apart is the one that holds everything together.

Antonia Leonard
Bold, playful and beautifully composed.
In Hook, Line + Sinker 2, Antonia Leonard continues her exploration of imagined landscapes through strong geometry, vivid colour and unexpected visual storytelling.
Rounded green tree forms rise through layered fields of purple, blue and earthy orange, their organic curves balanced by the structured lines of the surrounding landscape. On the right, a turquoise hook descends towards a brightly coloured fish, bringing humour, tension and curiosity to the composition.
The work plays with ideas of attraction and anticipation—the moment before something is caught or discovered. Yet its meaning remains open, allowing the viewer to create their own story within Antonia’s carefully constructed world.
Hook, Line + Sinker 2 has a strong contemporary presence and would bring colour, character and intrigue to a living room, dining area, entranceway or commercial interior.
Playful. Structured. Full of anticipation.
