AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND · MIXED-MEDIA ARTIST & FOUNDER OF ROOM OF FINDS

Emma Clotworthy

Emma Clotworthy is an Auckland-based mixed-media artist, mother of two adult children, horse trainer and founder of room of finds. Working instinctively through layered text, fragmented imagery and gestural marks, she explores memory, emotion and the tension between what is revealed on the surface and what remains unseen beneath it.

about

Working instinctively through impulse and intuition, I combine layered text, fragmented imagery and gestural marks to explore memory, emotion and lived experience.

My practice is a form of personal therapy—a process through which thoughts and moments are expressed, obscured, rewritten and rediscovered.

The layers within each work reflect the complexity I see within people. What is visible on the surface is only what we choose, or permit, others to see. Beneath it sit the memories, experiences and emotions that have shaped who we have become.

As a work nears completion, I often add final marks that suggest order or resolution. These finishing gestures echo the way we create an outward impression that everything is fine, even when what lies underneath may be complicated, unresolved or unseen.

The surface is pretty much it speaks to this tension. It does not suggest that nothing exists beneath the surface, but rather that the surface may be all another person is ever allowed to know.

For me, the finished artwork is secondary to the act of making. It is the process—the layering, concealing, revealing and responding—that holds the greatest meaning.

Once complete, the work remains deliberately open. Rather than determining how it should be understood, I leave space for each viewer to bring their own memories, associations and experiences.

A word, fragment or mark may awaken a different response in every person, forming an emotional or psychological connection that belongs uniquely to them.

I created room of finds from a desire to give artists a space where their work could be discovered alongside the stories, ideas and creative processes behind it.

For me, art is about more than the finished object. It is also about the person who made it, the layers it carries and the individual response it awakens in the viewer.

Because what we see is only the surface—and sometimes the most meaningful part of a work is what it allows us to recognise within ourselves.
